Feb 7: The National Union of Bank Employees has lodged a police report against Maybank Berhad saying the termination of two of ts employees, who are the union's leaders, was unlawful.
NUBE honorary treasurer Chen Ka Fatt and vice-president Abdul Jamil Jalaludeen were dismissed on January 31, believed to be linked to their participating in a rally outside the United Nations building in Geneva where they held a banner saying “Maybank robs poor Malaysian workers”.
NUBE's Kelantan head Mohd Azhar Yusoff said the duo's termination violated Section 59(1) (d) and (e) of Industrial Relations Act.
Azhar also lodged report against Maybank CEO, Abdul Wahid Omar, its human resource manager Nora Abdul Manaf and industrial relations chief Looi Heong Meng.
“NUBE has declared war on Maybank," Azhar said.
On Febuary 3, NUBE organised a small protest in Penang to condemn the dismissal of Chen and Abdul Jamil, where its Northern secretary Chee Yeeh Ceeu said the union was ready to do anything to protect bank workers from the abuses of law and threats.
“In fact, we are revitalised as our actions that follow this dismissal will create awareness amongst all workers in the country that it is the government-linked companies who are the biggest bully,” said Chee at the protest.
Abdul Jamil said he was being punished for his role as a union leader.
“I have not done any wrong but did my duty as a union leader, fighting for the rights of bank workers,” he said.
