In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Say: He is Allah, the One and Only!
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;
He begetteth not nor is He begotten.

Hadi slams funding cut to public varsities

an 19: PAS president Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang has warned against any move by the government to stop awarding scholarships to students pursuing post graduate studies at public universities citing shortage of funds.

Commenting on speculation of a cut in spending for public institutions of higher education (IPTA), Hadi (pic) said the excuse was not at all justified at a time when there had been leakages in the form of corruption and wasteful projects, as well as expenditure involving government leaders.

Hadi called on the government should instead plug the financial leakages.

"Certainly not by reducing funding to IPTA, the country’s most treasured asset,” he wrote on his Facebook.

The Marang member of parliament stressed that students selected for sponsorship must be assisted, adding that their studies now risked being terminated half-way as a result of the latest decision.

On cutting government funds for public universities, Hadi warned that it could also affect those being employed by the IPTA, pointing out that some who served for five years on contractual basis had yet to be confirmed as permanent employees.

“(The move) is a betrayal and a threat to the country’s future,” he stressed, and said increasing intake of foreign students on the pretext of improving international ranking of local varsities should not be carried out at the cost of local students.
