JERANTUT, Jan 24 – The Rural and Regional Development Ministry has allocated RM300 million this year to build houses for the Orang Asli community under the Housing Assistance programme through the Orang Asli Development Department.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said starting 2012 the government would also increase the allocation for building such houses from RM33,000 to RM40,000 and add facilities like electricity and water.
“This shows the government’s initiative to ensure the welfare of all races,” he told reporters after meeting the Orang Asli community in Kampung Tembeling Tengah near here on Sunday.
Mohd Shafie said the government was also in the process of issuing land titles to Orang Asli so that they would not be cultivating land that did not belong to them.
“Once approved in Parliament, they (Orang Asli) will be issued land titles to land areas entitled to them. It will also eliminate claims by them that the borderless jungles belonged to them,” he said.
He added that due to the encouraging response from parents, 1,000 more Kemas kindergartens would be opened this year throughout the country.
