Feb 9: Amid a report that Malaysian palm oil suppliers have been forced to stop exporting 30,000 tonnes of palm oil produce to Iran following a campaign by the US, pressure group Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia has revealed that two companies in Johor are trading palm oil with Israel.
SAMM president Badrul Hisham Shaharin said the two companies had been shipping palm oil from Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Pelepas ports to Ashdod, the biggest port in Israel.
Saying Israeli government officials had come to these ports to check on the safety and cleanliness of the palm oil, Badrul demanded an explanation from the International Trade and Industry ministry.
"How can this happen when Malaysia continues to portray itself void of any relationship with Israel! This is utter hypocrisy," he said.
Badrul also questioned whether palm oil harvested by Felda settlers was now sold to Israel despite the government's silence over allegations of trade ties with the Zionist entity.
“From the official website, one of the companies is linked to Felda. So the question is whether the palm oil harvested by Felda settlers is sold to Israel,” asked Badrul, popularly known as Chegubard.
During the 2012 budget debate last year, deputy minister of International Trade and Industry Mukhriz Mahathir told parliament that a cabinet meeting had approved applications by multinationals to carry out transactions with Israel despite the government's claims to solidarity with Palestinians by opposing any ties with the Israeli regime.
Citing two documents, Chegubard explained that no less than 100 metric tonnes of palm oil had been sold to Israel.
This, he said, was despite local palm oil supply being insufficient.
Chegubard said that the amount of palm oil sold to Israel was not only sufficient for its domestic usage, but also would enable Israel to re-market for the international market.
Earlier, a report by the European Commission of Trade last year revealed that Malaysia was one of the top 15 out of 50 trading partners with Israel.
