BANGKOK, July 4 – Outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, today, resigned as the Democrat Party leader after his party lost in Thailand’s
general election, yesterday.
He made the announcement at the party’s headquarters, here, taking responsibility for his party’s poor performance.
During the election campaign, Abhisit hinted he may relinquish party leadership if his party captured fewer seats than in the previous election.
The Democrat Party won 159 seats in yesterday’s election, compared to the 172 seats it had before the dissolution of Parliament.
Democrat still dominates its strongholds in Bangkok and the southern provinces, with Pheu Thai party winning mainly in the northeastern, northern and central provinces.
Opposition party Pheu Thai, led by its de facto leader Thaksin Shinawatra, won the election with 265 seats.
Shinawatra’s youngest sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, is the party’s prime ministerial candidate, and is likely to be the country’s first female prime minister.
Under the Thai Constitution, the prime minister is elected through a voting process in Parliament.
Outgoing Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij is the Democrat Party’s deputy leader.
