In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Mat Sabu Allowed Bail After Statement On Communists Taken

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 20 – Penang police detained PAS Deputy President Mohamad Sabu today in connection with his controversial statement about the communists on Aug 21.

State police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said a warrant of arrest was issued against Mohamed, or more well known as Mat Sabu, following his statement in Tasek Gelugor on Aug 21.

He said police had contacted Mat Sabu about the warrant of arrest and that the latter had surrendered himself at the Penang Police Contingent headquarters, today.

“He cooperated with the police, and, upon his arrival at the Penang International Airport at about 7.30pm, Mat Sabu was taken to the Penang Police Contingent headquarters,” he told reporters, here.

Mat Sabu was seen arriving at the State Police Contingent Headquarters at about 8.30pm, and was allowed bail, after his statement was taken.

Ayub said the police had completed investigations on the case under Section 500 Penal Code, and that the investigation papers had been submitted to the Prosecution Department.

“The charge will be made in the Butterworth Sessions Court tomorrow under Section 500 Penal Code (Defamation), which is read under Section 499 Penal Code, and carries with it, jail of up to two years, or fine, or both,” he said.

Ayub said the police received 1,013 police reports in August against Mat Sabu over his statement, including from the heirs and family members of the victims killed during the Bukit Kepong incident, who claimed that the statement shamed and degraded their families.

Mat Sabu’s speech on Mat Indera in Tasik Gelugor, Penang on Aug 21 triggered a controversy when Mat Indera, who was regarded by many as a communist, was touted as a hero by Mat Sabu and not the 25 policemen and their families who were killed in the communist attack on the Bukit Kepong Police Station, in Muar, Johor, in 1950.

Besides that, the PAS deputy president was also reported to have claimed that Umno founder Datuk Onn Jaafar and and Malaysia’s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman were not qualified to be regarded as independence fighters because they were working for the British administration.
