SHAH ALAM, Jan 6 – Staging a demonstration is not the best way for students to express their dissatisfaction over certain matters, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research Management, Professor Dr Abu Bakar Majeed said today.
Instead, he said, they should resolve the matter through intellectual discourse by having discussions or debates by inviting the rival parties to give their views.
On the recent demonstration involving university students, he said, it happened because they did not understand the meaning of academic freedom and for allowing themselves to be used by others.
“In the country’s legal framework, there is no constraint in academic freedom for students or lecturers. What is crucial is that they argue based on facts, not emotion or to follow those with vested interests,” he said in a statement to Bernama here today.
UiTM Director of Centre for Islamic Thought and Understanding, Associate Professor Dr Rahimi Osman said demonstration is against religious teachings, law and culture in the country.
“Demonstration is an act which has no connection with Islam. This is because Islam teaches its followers to solve problems through discussions and negotiations,” he added.
