Jan 19: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Aziz's opposition to a proposal by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission for cabinet ministers to make public declaration of their assets could be due to his fear that BN leaders risked losing their seats once their wealth was known, said PAS Youth.
Nazri (right) had earlier rejected the proposal, saying the move would pose a "danger" to the individuals.
"Members of the Cabinet and their spouses are not duty bound to declare their assets to the MACC. We should only do (declare) it to the PM," said Nazri.
However, PAS Youth's information chief Riduan Mohd Nor questioned what Nazri had meant by the word 'danger'.
“Does he mean 'danger' to family members of the minister and their assets, or 'danger' to their future once their millions of ringgit worth of assets' become public knowledge?" he remarked.
Saying Nazri's excuse was superficial, Riduan reminded that government leaders were adequately protected in terms of their personal safety, and as such they could hardly be targeted by criminals who were after their wealth.
Riduan (left) added that it was possible that more scandals involving ministers could be out in the open if their actual wealth was known.
“If members of the cabinet are truly free from any corruption, there is nothing to hide or fear," he stressed.
The suggestion by the MACC followed the move by the Penang state government to publicly declare assets of their top leaders, with details of each Exco member's worth published on the state online portal.
MAAC panel chairperson Zaitun Zawiyah Puteh had earlier revealed that the commission made the proposal to prime minister Najib Razak on Dec 12.
